Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate the types of eating disorders.

  •  Identify comorbid mental health disorders associated with eating disorders.

  • Recognize systemic and oral findings associated with eating disorders.

  • Identify referral sources for eating disorder treatment.

Dental health care providers may encounter individuals who exhibit extra- and intro-oral signs and symptoms of eating disorders. The roles dental health care providers should play include recognition of the disorder, prompt referral to medical care, and education for patients with the eating disorder. All of these actions can improve the overall health of the patient and save an individual’s life.
